The round table sought to explore the social protection responses to COVID 19 with a focus on how basic income (BI) can help transition out of emergency cash transfers or temporary measures to palliate the effects of a crisis. Panelists explored the challenges of implementing BI and devise ways of addressing them, including the tradeoffs and the political economy of BI as well as its gender implications. The panel also included a reflection on Iran and Colombia’s experiences with BI including their challenges and lessons learned. Finally, it explored how people use cash received as social assistance and how it can enhance their livelihoods and contribute to tackle poverty and inequality.
