Dr Knut Lönnroth is a professor of Social Medicine at the Department of Public Health Sciences, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, where he is also the director of the Centre for Tuberculosis (TB) Research, the WHO Collaboration Centre on TB and Social Determinants, and the Social protection Action Research and Knowledge Sharing network (SPARKS). He has worked for the Global Tuberculosis Programme of WHO for 14 years, where he coordinated policy guidance on, among other things, social determinants and social interventions to improve prevention, uptake, adherence and financial risk protection. He coordinated the development of a new global indicator for the assessment of the economic impact of TB for patients and affected households. His research at Karolinska Institutet focuses mainly on social consequences of diseases, with special attention to the intersection between health care and social sectors.
